VSQA Sponsors Student Awards

Three slate valley schools have been selected to receive 2 student awards each this year sponsored by the Vermont Slate Quarry Association. Poultney, Fair Haven, and Granville Schools will present awards for Community Involvement and Music to 2 students each at a school assembly sometime in May 2016. These awards were created to recognize young people who strive to improve themselves and their community and also acknowledge students who demonstrate a passion for music.

Years ago, as the slate industry began to grow, the hard work and efforts of the slate quarry workers helped the Slate Valley to flourish. Music served to lessen ethnic tension in a diverse community of mostly immigrant quarry workers. These awards are meant to reflect and honor the qualities of those hard working people who contributed so much to our local history.
